A police officer was Tuesday arrested over claims of defilement of a girl at the Kapenguria police station in West Pokot.

A 15-year-old who was in need of care and protection said the officer defiled her on May 15, 2023, at about 11 pm.

This happened at the station’s dining room, she told police.

The girl was taken to the station by children officers from a home on May 9 for care and protection.

The girl said the officer called her from the cells and forcefully led her to the dining section of the facility and defiled her on a police jacket.

This happened on the floor of the dining room of the station.

After the girl made the claims, the officer was detained for grilling.

The girl was taken to a local hospital for attention and further action, police said.

Such accusations are not new in the service. Police term them isolated and that those reported had been dealt with.

Some of them remain under probe.

Cases of defilement have been on the rise in the country.

Defilement cases stood at 5,530 in 2022, 6,492 in 2021, 6,801 in 2020, 5,297 in 2019 and 4,767 in 2018 while sodomy cases stood at 86 in 2022, 88 in 2021, 54 in 2020, 91 in 2019 and 71 in 2018.
