President William Ruto has revealed that he had to personally step in and speak to millers to strike a deal in importation of 200,00 metric tonnes of maize.

The President said that the initial millers who had been given importation permits refused to do so.

''I looked for millers and sat with them, I told them to reach out to their suppliers, the people who were given licences failed to import,'' the President said.

Speaking during a joint media interview at State House on Sunday evening, Ruto said his interventions have reduced significantly the cost of living.

''They have imported 100 metric tonnes of maize and we have on the way 100 metric tonnes, we have to use a double-pronged approach when you see the other one is not working,'' Ruto said.

The President said the plan is to invest on production as a long-term solution to reduce the cost of living.

''You can't do it on short-term, the only sure way to reduce the cost of food is through product,'' he said.

''To lower the cost of living is increase production and that is why we are sporting farmers.''

The President said the government is doing enough to increase supply in the short term and invest on production to achieve the same on the long-term.
