Azimio asks supporters to throng JKIA on Friday to welcome Raila

The return could reminiscent 2017 where Raila braved bullets as he pushed to access CBD

Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition party has asked its supporters to turn up and welcome Raila Odinga at JKIA on Friday.

Raila will be returning to the country on Friday morning after a weeklong break in Dubai.

On Wednesday, National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi wrote to Azimio MPs asking them to gather at the JKIA to welcome Raila when he returns.

The ODM official also asked Raila's supporters to show love for their leader by turning up in large numbers to usher him into the country at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

The invite also asked the supporters to then proceed with Raila for a mega rally at the Kamkunji Grounds in Kibra.

“As a party, we are gearing to accord him a grand welcome on arrival at the JKIA, then join him in a grand procession to the people’s Baraza at the Kamkunji Grounds, Kibra Constituency, on the same day. The Rt Hon Odinga will address the nation at the said meeting,” the Ugunja town MP said on Wednesday.

“We appeal to all supporters of our quest for a just, fair and democratic nation that prioritises its citizens, to turn up in large numbers and welcome Rt Hon Odinga home and attend the Kibra rally. We further appeal to everyone attending the twin events to maintain peace and order as we have done in the past.”

There are fears that the return could reminiscent events of November 17, 2017, when Raila made a dramatic entry into the country after weeks abroad.

Then the police were forced to use force in nasty confrontations with Raila's supporters as the then Nasa leader was making his way to the Nairobi Central Business District.

Hundreds of armed police officers cordoned off the city as they moved to prevent Raila's thousands of supporters from matching to the city.

Tens were shot dead and hundreds injured in day-long battles as Raila's supporters sang patriotic songs with the signature chorus of 'Baba while you were away' renting the air.

Raila finally managed to access the CBD through Haile Selassie road, exiting through Ngong Road amid a hail of police bullets.
