Former Kenya Film Classification Board boss Ezekiel Mutua has opined that someone was sleeping on their job to allow the deaths that have been witnessed in the Kilifi fasting cult.

So far,73 bodies have been exhumed attributed to the Kilifi fasting church led by controversial pastor Paul Mackenzie.

Mackenzie is alleged to have misled his congregants into fasting till death in hopes they will meet Jesus.

In an interview with Spice FM, Mutua said government officials looked the other way.

"Government officials were either duped, they connived or they were compromised," Mutua said.

"The politicians and the leadership of the county, somebody somewhere slept on the job. There are leaders there, there are government structures there. I refuse to believe that nobody knew."

Mutua said with the existence of community policing and the nyumba kumi initiative there was no way a massacre of such magnitude happened without others noticing.

"There is no way that this case could have led to the number of deaths that we are seeing without the government knowing. There are assistant chiefs, there are chiefs, there is community policing, there is nyumba kumi, " he said.

Mutua explained that the Kenya Film Classification Board is only mandated to check on the broadcast content going to the screens.

He is the current Music Copyright Society of Kenya chief executive officer.
