National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula wants members of the National Government Administration in Kilifi to be held responsible for the Kilifi cult deaths.

Wetang'ula said chiefs, their assistants and Nyumba Kumi members are to blame for failing to report to authorities.

"The administrators are empowered by the government to closely monitor what is going on in their areas of jurisdiction to protect lives and properties. They have failed in their security roles," Wetang'ula said.

As of Sunday, 47 bodies had been retrieved from the cult-related activities that have claimed lives in Shakahola village in Kilifi.

Police exhumed the bodies of victims who were allegedly brainwashed into fasting to death by the head of the Good News International Church Paul Mackenzie.

"Where were the chiefs, their assistants and Nyumba Kumi officers when the cult-related activities were being practised in the area," Wetang'ula said.

The Speaker-led MPs John Chikati (Tongareni), Samuel Moroto ( Kapenguria) and Titus Lotee (Kacheliba) in condemning the horrific cult and called for thorough investigations into the incident.

The leaders were addressing congregants at St Daniel Comboni Catholic church in Kwanza constituency, Trans Nzoia on Sunday.

They demanded that Mackenzie together with his associates face the law.

"The Kilifi cult killings remind us of a similar incident in Kibwetere in Uganda where 800 people died after they were brainwashed into taking poison. We should not allow our people to perish in the hands of rogue clergy," he said.

MP Chikati demanded regulation of churches through the National Council of Churches of Kenya to ensure that only legitimate ones were allowed to operate.

He said if the NCCK will be unable to regulate churches, he will be forced to table a motion in Parliament that will regulate the religious organizations.

"I am going to bring before the House a motion seeking to regulate churches if NCCK will not be able to do so," Chikati said.

The Speaker also called on leaders in bandits-prone regions to join hands and support the government's efforts to stamp out the vice in the area.

MPs Moroto, Lotee and Chikati asked leaders from the Luhya community to support the Speaker saying he was the seniormost leader they had in the Kenya Kwanza government.
