The ongoing construction of a male hostel at the Kenya Medical Training College Mandera Campus is expected to be completed in three months.
The hostel, funded by the Ministry of Health, will provide accommodation for male students.
Health CS Susan Wafula on Monday toured the facility accompanied by Mandera Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif and the KMTC CEO Kelly Oluoch.
This will enhance healthcare training in Kenya's northern region and address the healthcare workforce shortage.
During the visit, the officials discussed a range of issues geared towards improving the institution's capacity to train healthcare workers.
Another critical aspect of the discussion was the college's enrollment of more students after receiving accreditation for certificate courses in nursing and clinical medicine.
To this end, the county government pledged to introduce student financing in partnership with the Higher Education Loans Board to offer financial assistance to students at the facility.
Oluoch highlighted the institution's goal of becoming a premier medical training institution and noted that as part of the initiative, the college is set to open its doors to students from neighbouring Ethiopia and Somalia.
Additionally, the county government has committed to helping the KMTC in staffing and constructing two new classrooms.
The move is expected to bolster the college's training capacity, which is vital in addressing the healthcare workforce shortage in the region.
