Police are investigating an incident in which a seven-year-old child was killed in a fire incident in Mathare slums, Nairobi.

The fire broke out at about 10 pm on Monday in Bondeni area killing Patience Mwende Kioko.

The girl was sleeping in the house when the fire broke out killing her.

Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei said a fire engine rushed to the scene and managed to contain the spread.

The remains were moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and probe.

In Mowlem area, an apartment was burnt in a fire incident. Police said they are yet to know the cause of the fire.

During the incident household goods of unknown value were destroyed.

The fire was caused by an unattended electric kettle, police said.

In Dandora, police said about ten families lost property in a fire incident.

No one was injured during the incident, police said, adding many were left homeless and property destroyed.

And in Mowlem area, several stalls were destroyed in a fire incident. Among the structures destroyed were salons, second-hand shoe shops and clothes stalls.

The cause of the fire is yet to be known. Police say they are investigating the incident.
