Ruto calls for political leadership to end crisis in East DRC

He appealed for more support from regional bodies and the international community

President William Ruto has called for political leadership in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to drive stability in the country. 

The President was speaking on Friday during the African Union Peace and Security mini-Summit of Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.  

During the summit, the presidents discussed the situation in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on the sidelines of the 36th Ordinary Session.

Ruto said the effort must be corroborated by countries neighboring DRC for peace and sustainability following the humanitarian crisis taking place in the country. 

“Without these bold steps, our region will not be able to ride the negative effects,” the president said. 

Ruto said a resolution to the conflict has a long way to go. 

He appealed for more support from regional bodies and the international community to bring stability to the country. 

The Head of State noted that the resources will support comprehensive interventions to assist the growing humanitarian needs. 

Other Heads of State present were João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço (Angola), Évariste Ndayishimiye (Burundi), Paul Kagame (Rwanda), Felix Tshisekedi (Democratic Republic of Congo) and Suluhu Samia (Tanzania)

Other delegates were Jessica Alupo (Vice President of Uganda), and Deng Dau (Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (South Sudan) and Commissioner for African Union Commission Political Affairs, Peace and Security Ambassador Bankole Adeoye. 

Ruto strongly urged the convening of the Nairobi-IV session of the Inter-Congolese Consultations.
