Narok Senator Ledama Olekina has called on MPs to take their time in the budget-making process.

Speaking during an interview with Citizen TV on Thursday, Ledama said the two monsters talking the economy down are corruption and poor governance.

He called on MPs to understand what it is they are spending Kenyans' money on.

"When it comes to the issue of the budget policy statement and budget-making process, please take some time and read and know what it is that you are giving the power to the executive," Ledama said.

"If you are allowing the executive to increase the capital gain tax from 5 to 15 per cent, think of something called unintended consequences."

He said no one will want to sell if the capital gain tax is increased from 5 to 15 per cent and thus this will stunt economic growth.

This comes as the Treasury called on Kenyans to give their opinion on President William Ruto’s first Budget.

The ministry had declared plans to hold public hearings on the proposed 2023/2024 Financial Year and Medium-Term period Budget at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre from January 11-13.

Ruto’s first budget has been set at Sh3.64 trillion.

The Head of State has already announced austerity plans in his efforts to create jobs for Kenyans.

The Sh3.64 trillion Budget is an increase from an earlier estimate of Sh3.55 trillion.

The majority of the President's programmes are aimed at fast-tracking economic recovery and lowering the high cost of living.
