Kenya, UK Parliament pledge to strengthen ties

Legislators from the two countries want to step up engagements

Kenya and UK Parliament have pledged to strengthen partnerships to enhance democracy in the two countries.

Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula and officials of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association-UK agreed to have more engagements between legislators of the two countries to achieve the goal.

The Speaker, who is in the UK on an official tour, acknowledged the role played by the association in capacity building for MPs

He said CPA-UK has been instrumental in supporting House Committees and clerks on a variety of procedures and workings of Parliament.

CPA-UK was represented by Chairperson Ian Liddell-Grainger and secretary general Stephen Twigg in the meeting at the Houses of Parliament in London.

The leaders underscored Kenya-UK cordial Parliamentary relations traced through numerous engagements between the two countries.

The CPA-UK has been at the forefront of bringing together legislators on various parliamentary-related programmes aimed at strengthening House diplomacy.

Further, the meeting discussed the upcoming Post-Election Seminar for Members of the National Assembly slated for January 2023.

The event, which will be conducted in conjunction with the CPA-UK Secretariat aims at developing the capacity for MPs to effectively undertake their mandate.

It is also aimed at promoting national values and ideals of parliamentary democracy.

The seminar will take place between January 30 to February 3.
