Flowing down the busy roads and terraces, floods which have claimed over 290 lives across the country have left Mai Mahiu residents devastated.

According to the weatherman, the floods which are persistent will continue but with minimal fall and destruction across the country.

The rains which have pounded the country for about a month now have wreaked havoc leaving hundreds stranded and others spending days and nights in camps and schools.

"We have been cleaning this area for the past three days but were lucky to be alive," a resident who wanted to remain anonymous told the Star.

Even as she spoke, it was evident that the thick mud that was now resting in his house would not go away any time soon.

"This is the kind of mess that we are in here and the government should come in and help us."

On May 14 the Roads Minister Kipchumba Murkomen said the government needs between Sh26-Sh30 billion to restore critical infrastructure destroyed by floods.

Speaking when he assessed the state of the Gamba section of the Lamu-Witu-Garsen road that was swept away by floods, the CS said the government will re-evaluate the damage before embarking on rehabilitation.

"We have been hit hard by the heavy rains as a country and my ministry has suffered the most destruction. A lot of roads and bridges have been destroyed,” the CS said.
