Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has said it is not a crime to be a child of a politician or a politician.

His comment comes after Raila Odinga's daughter Winnie Odinga and Kennedy Musyoka were nominated to the East African Legislative Assembly.

“I'll vote for Kennedy, Winnie and seven other persons, mostly former MPs to join EALA,” he said.

Members of Parliament will vote on Thursday.

Winnie and Kennedy have received backlash and support in equal measures following their nominations, as others termed them dynasties.

Kennedy is Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka's son.

Miguna Miguna on Saturday said that Winnie's last name Odinga is an Ornament and is not a qualification for public office.

Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai supported Winnie's nomination, saying she was born a politician.

"Just let Winnie be the EALA MP. She was born a politician and it’s her calling. EALA is a great start for her, The Odinga family is uniquely political. They have done more good for Kenya. Let Winnie be," he said.

Winnie and Kennedy are not the only politicians' children to be nominated to EALA, Oburu Odinga, who is Raila Odinga's elder son was also a member of the assembly for five years.

He is now the Siaya Senator.

Kenya has nine seats up for grabs at the East African Legislative Assembly.

Five of the nine will go to the Kenya Kwanza coalition while four will go to the Azimio la Umoja coalition.

Each party is expected to send back a maximum of three names for every position. This implies that for the nine slots, 27 names will be sent to the committee for vetting.

The committee will file a report and table it in the two Houses for debate before a vote is taken.

The EALA Elections Act, 2011 provides that a new assembly is elected within 90 days before the expiry of the term of the subsisting assembly.

This implies the country is already late in submitting names to the assembly.

Only Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is a new member of the regional bloc, are yet to submit the names of their representatives.
