Former Nandi Woman Representative Zipporah Kering has said her nomination to the East African Legislative Assembly is a result of her loyalty to President William Ruto.

Speaking during an interview with Citizen TV, Kering said that she played her role well during the campaign, saying some people contributed their wealth to help and it bore fruits.

“Let me say that loyalty pays, everyone played their role well during the campaigns, some used their money to make sure the elections were worn,” she said.

Kering said she conceded defeat as an MP during the party nominations and supported President William Ruto's win, hoping that her political career would not end at party nomination.

“I knew that the government has many positions, that's why I held on to the EALA position, and continue with my political career,” she said.

Kering said her dream of joining EALA started in 2017 but bailed out during the application

“It has always been my dream, I made an application in 2017, then bailed out, and I decided to go to EALA, the legislation is like any other in the country,” she said.

“I hope I'll land the job.”

She was nominated alongside 14 others, under Kenya Kwanza.

The 14 include Rebecca Merukeju Lowoiya, Godfrey Maina, Joel Nyambane, Fredrick Muteti, Falhadha Iman, David Sankok, Hassan Omar, Abdikadir Omar, Anne Too, Jonas Misto, Cyprian Iringo, Lilian Tomitom, Yasser Ali and Salim Mohammed.

Kenya has nine seats up for grabs at the East African Legislative Assembly.

Five of the nine will go the Kenya Kwanza coalition while four will go to the Azimio la Umoja coalition.

Each party is expected to send back a maximum of three names for every position. This implies that for the nine slots, 27 names will be sent to the committee for vetting.

The committee will file a report and table it in the two Houses for debate before a vote is taken.

The EALA Elections Act, 2011 provides that a new assembly is elected within 90 days before the expiry of the term of the subsisting assembly.

This implies the country is already late in submitting names to the assembly.

Only Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is a new member of the regional bloc, are yet to submit the names of their representatives.
