President William Ruto has pledged hundreds of employment opportunities for residents of Kibera Constituency, Nairobi.

Speaking while commissioning a housing project in Kibera, the President said the initiative will employ several jobless residents.

Ruto said the housing project will turn around the fortunes of the area and improve the livelihoods of the residents.

"Hii kibra ambayo ilijulikana kama slum kubwa katika Africa itakua the largest real estate in Kenya," Ruto declared.

The housing project is set to create 4000 more housing units in the area.

Ruto said the houses being built are for the slum dwellers and that they will be prioritised once the project is complete.

The head of state said the housing project will create up to 2,500 job opportunities for hustlers.

He added that Kibra and Lang'ata dwellers will be the first to be employed in the housing project.

Ruto said residents will pay the same amount they have been paying in the slums in the new houses. Additionally, they will get to own the houses after 20 years.

"Ile shillingi 2,500 unalipa kwa ile nyumba ya mabati au ya  matope, utakuja kulipa hio 2,500 kwa ile nyumba tutakujengea," he said.

The president said that the welders around Ngong road, Lang'ata and Kariobangi will be the ones to supply the housing project with 15,000 windows and 4,800 doors to be used in the project.

Additionally, he said the contractor will only handle 60 per cent of the work in the project leaving 40 per cent to the small business owners.

The small business owners were also promised an influx of Sh550 million to support their businesses.

He added that even those who are skilled without papers have an opportunity for employment in the project.

Ruto said more projects will be done in the years to come and each will create up to 2500 job opportunities.

More housing projects are to be set up as Lang'ata B and Lang'ata C and D.

"Na tukianzisha ile Soweto B na Soweto C, na  D, si tutakua na watu wengine 2500. Sasa ile mulikua mnaniuliza kazi si ndo hio," Ruto said

The President said that every constituency in Nairobi will get a housing project.

He added that the Makongeni project will create 20,000 employment opportunities where more than 25,000 houses are to be built.

The president targets to build 200,000 houses per year to combat the housing shortage in the country.
