President William Ruto has abolished the Kazi Mtaani project that was started during the tenure of former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Speaking at the groundbreaking of Soweto East Zone B Social Housing, Kibra, Nairobi County, Ruto said the youth will now be building houses and not collecting garbage.
He said youth from Lang'ata and Kibra will be given the first priority to work on the housing project.
"Kaazi Mtaani is now outdated, the Kaazi Mtaani of collecting garbage will not be the case, the building will now be our business and the first people to get jobs in this project will be from Kibra," he said.
"The housing programme is not just about houses, it also gives us an opportunity for employment."
Ruto said the number that was employed in Kazi Mtaani was minimal and more people will be added to the housing project.
"Those who were employed in Kazi Mtaani were 500 from each ward, through this programme, we will have employment opportunities for 2500 youths," he said.
He added the housing programmes will take place in many other areas as everyone deserves a decent home.
"We want to make this programme a reality, we want every Kenyan to own a decent home, I have talked with governors from various counties to start sparing land that we will use on affordable housing as we want to change the faces of all cities in Kenya."
The Kazi Mtaani project was started during former President Uhuru's reign.
