The Kenya Highways Authority has closed Mugeka - Murang’a Road after the embankment on sections of the road collapsed.

KeNHA in a statement on Friday evening said the damaged section lies on the stretch between Gathaji Junction and Posta in Murang'a Town.

“This closure is a result of the collapse of the road embankment across five sections, causing significant damage to the road infrastructure and posing serious safety risks to motorists and pedestrians,” KeNHA said.

In light of the closure, KeNHA advised motorists and pedestrians to use alternative routes to their destinations pending appropriate action.

It advised motorists from Mugeka to Murang'a town to use Mugeka - Kaweru Junction - Gakonya - Murang’a route.

The authority said traffic from Murang'a to Kiriaini should use Murang'a - Kangema - Kiriani Route while motorists headed to Kiriaini from Murang’a should use the Murang'a - Gatiba Junction - Gitugi - Kiriaini route.

KeNHA said it is actively monitoring the situation on-site 24/7 as it determines the necessary remedial actions.

“Motorists are urged to remain vigilant, adhere to safety protocols and exercise caution, especially during heavy rains to minimise the impact,” the authority said.

“KeNHA is dedicated to ensuring the safety of all road users and will continue to closely monitor the situation, providing timely updates.”

Earlier, KeNHA advised motorists traveling along the Lodwar - Lokichar Road to exercise extreme caution when approaching the bridge between Karoge and Kasuroi.

It said the recent heavy rainfall has resulted in damage to a section of the road on the Lokichar side of the bridge.

“Repair work is currently underway and police are on-site directing traffic. Motorists are further urged to drive safely and follow instructions from on-site personnel,” the authority said.

It further cautioned motorists and pedestrians against using the old Athi River bridge which it said was almost flooding owing to rising water levels.

It said the approaches to the bridge have been severely damaged and are at risk of collapsing, posing significant hazard to pedestrians and motorists.

“The authority strongly advises against using this bridge. Instead, all road users should use the New Carriageway Bridge adjacent to the Old Bridge.

KeNHA also issued a traffic advisory and alerted motorists of the rising flood waters at Tana River Bridge in the Mororo area.

It said the Seven Folks Dams too was nearing full capacity, heightening the risk of further flooding.

“Motorists are urged to exercise vigilance, adhere to safety guidelines, and cooperate with authorities to mitigate the impact of the ongoing flooding,” it said.
