Nurses have threatened to down their tools should their demands remian unmet.

Speaking on KTN News on Tuesday, the Kenya National Union of Nurses SG Seth Panyako said the National Governing Council will be meeting on May 17 to decide on the matter.

Panyako said the government has until then to ensure their grievances are addressed to avert the looming strike.

"We will not join the doctors' strike, we will be going on our own strike with our own issues not related to the doctors’ issues,” Panyako said.

"We are waiting for the meeting of the National Governing Council to happen on May 17 to decide whether to go on strike or not because I have no powers to issue a strike notice, they only direct me to speak on their behalf," Panyako noted.

Should they make true their threats, the situation will be worse for patients who are already struggling with the absence of doctors from healthcare facilities.

The doctors have been on strike for close to two months, with clinical officers also having downed their tools on April 1.

Some of the issues nurses want handled include the CBA and extension of UHC staff contracts for two years under controversial terms.

They also want the officer who hit KMPDU SG Davji Atellah with a teargas canister during their past demonstrations apprehended.

“It would be very unfortunate for nurses to go on strike because if we go on a strike we are the only cadre within the health sector that closes hospitals and walks away with keys," Panyako said.
