The County Assembly of Nyamira through the Committee of Education and Vocational Training will scrutinize the report on the proposed sites for Nyamira University and report to the County Assembly in ten days.

Assembly speaker Enock Okero directed the chairperson of the Education and vocational training who is also the Manga ward MCA Samwel Ogeto to ensure his committee takes time to ensure they go through the report and scrutinize it before they can give the recommendations to the assembly.

“I direct that the committee on Education and vocational training goes and scrutinizes the recommendations on Nyamira university sites before they table a comprehensive report to the house in ten days,” speaker Okero directed.

There has been a heated debate by a section of Nyamira County leaders on where the university will be situated, hence the report will give a determination of the county assembly on where the university should be situated.

West Mugirango MP Stephen Mogaka insists that the university must be situated within the County headquarters by the fact that it will start as a constituent college which needs ready infrastructure in place.

He said Nyamira town has already established infrastructure to hold the institution before full establishment.

Mogaka further argues that there is no competition on where the university should be situated because, at the end of the day, a solution will be found now that the president has agreed to give a university to Nyamira County.

“As leaders, we need to take advantage of the president's offer and grab it as early as possible because this institution will not only help our children in furthering their studies but also enable our county to grow economically just like other counties which have higher learning institutions,” Mogaka said.

After the establishment and functionality of Nyamira University, it will be the first university in the county after the closure of the Kisii University satellite campus alongside 4 others, back in 2017 by the Ministry of Education for lacking requirements of a satellite campus.

Among the sites that will be considered for hosting the university are; Senator Kebaso Secondary School and Riakimai in West Mugirango Constituency, Ikonge, Ekerubo Gi’etai and Sere in North Mugirango Constituency, Kiabonyoru School and Simbauti in Borabu Constituency and Manga in Kitutu Masaba.
