The Government has announced three areas where residents of Nairobi will be accommodated if they cannot access their homes due to raging floods.

The Head of Public Service Felix Koskei on Monday announced that affected residents will be accommodated at the National Youth Service (NYS) headquarters, Kamiti and Kasarani.

“Treatment is mainly at Mathare Hospital,” Koskei said in a press release.

Koskei noted that Principal Secretary for the State Department of Correctional Services Salome Muhia and her counterparts Harry Kimutai (Medical Services) and Mary Muriuki (Public Health) have visited the three sites.

He further noted technical teams from Housing, Public Works and the military accompanied the team.

He added that Lands PS Nixon Korir and other five PSs together with a technical team from Housing, Public Works and the military visited the site to enable factual and guided activation of response.

“Ministries of Interior, Roads and Public Works and the military, Nairobi City County and Water Resources Authority have produced multiple teams that are currently visiting three rivers focusing on the identified hotspots to report on the status of the riparian area, proposing actual works to be undertaken to secure the corridors, roads, footpaths, housing and tree planting,” he added.

Koskei said Brigadier Joseph Muracia and Water Resources Authority CEO Mohamed Shurie are coordinating the teams.

The Head of Public Service further announced that regional commissioners will lead National Government Administrative Officers teams with technical teams from the Interior, Public Works, Housing and military in the counties and report on specific issues laid out in a response form.

“The Ministry of Asal is responding to food and non-food items needed countrywide immediately. The teams from the counties are reporting needs on a special desk at the ministry,” he stated.

He noted that President William Ruto has directed the Head of Public Service to chair meetings of all teams physically and virtually by the end of the day on Monday.

So far, Kenya has lost 103 people due to the flooding across the country, according to government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura.

Speaking in Mombasa, Mwaura said the number of casualties could be higher.

The figure does not include the Mai Mahiu tragedy where at least 42 have been confirmed dead.
