Security has been enhanced around Parliament ahead of the planned State of the Nation address by President William Ruto on Thursday afternoon.

A contingent of GSU officers have been deployed to all major routes leading to Parliament which include Harambee Avenue and Parliament Road.

They are also backed by their regular counterparts and the administration police, anti-riot unit which could be seen making patrols.

NYS officers have also been paraded around the precincts of the building.

Inside the Parliament Buildings, there was a flurry of activities with workers putting up the final touches ahead of the event.

A major tent has been erected where the president will be hosted after the event.

President William Ruto is delivering the address in accordance with Article 132 (1) of the Constitution.

It provides that the President should address a special sitting of Parliament once every year and may address Parliament at any other time.

Once every year, the President is also expected to report, in an address to the nation, on all the measures taken and the progress achieved in the realisation of the national values.

This year’s address comes in the wake of the ongoing bi-partisan talks between the ruling coalition Kenya Kwanza and the Azimio la Umoja.

It also comes at a time when the government has okayed the deployment of up to 1,000 police officers to Haiti on Multinational Security Support (MSS).

Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome told MPs, Thursday that the selection of the officers has been undertaken.

"Selection has been done it was very fair and competitive," he stated.

He said the officers who are currently undergoing training underwent rigorous vetting including medical tests.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kindiki Kithure who had appeared alongside the IG said Kenya stands to benefit from the deployment.
