Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has proposed the extension of the presidential term limit from the current five to seven years.

The senator submitted the memorandum to the National Dialogue Committee at Bomas of Kenya on Friday.

The legislature wants the presidential term limit extended two seven-year terms.

"The extension of the Presidential term of seven years each term for two terms from the current five years to allow stability and pragmatic development in the country," he said.

He said the move would enable the President to have a good opportunity to form and establish a formidable team to deliver his manifesto.

"Besides, the Kenya presidential election is always highly profiled as a result of it being conducted within a short period of time thus making it a do or die adventure," Cherargei notes in his proposal.

However, the proposal was met with mixed reactions from a section of Kenyans who expressed their divergent views on social media platform X.

Captain Kipkorir said, "I don't agree with the term limit in as much as I support Kenya Kwanza government. Other things are okay."

Another X user, Bianca, added: "Senator, extension of presidential term limit hapana."

Juspir Mugire said the seven-year presidential term should be for one term only with easier recall, not impeachment procedures.

"The return of PM should include abolishing the presidential system. Hybrid hasn't worked anywhere. There is no need for 40 per cent to counties. Just let the money follow functions."

Other proposals he wants are the re-introduction of the office of the Prime Minister and the creation of the Office of the Official Opposition Leader.

The lawmaker also wants the dialogue committee to deliberate on parties to give 30 per cent to the youth, women and Persons with Disabilities during nominations in the General elections.

He also wants the Senate to be given veto powers on the bills in Parliament and the increment to 40 per cent allocation to counties in national revenue.
