President William Ruto on Tuesday led the nation in mourning the death of Field Marshall Muthoni wa Kirima.

Muthoni is said to have passed away on Monday night.

"Deeply saddened by the passing of Field Marshall Muthoni Kirima, a powerful figure of broad influence who fought for our freedom," Ruto said.

Sending his condolences message, Ruto eulogised Muthoni as a courageous, hardworking woman who loved her family.

The President noted that the late field marshall served her community and sacrificed for our country, always with diligence from the frontline.

"We honour her heroic contribution to the freedom and development of our country and pray to God that He grants the family strength at this painful time. Rest In Peace, our Shujaa," Ruto added.

She served as Dedan Kimathi's personal assistant in the struggle for liberation.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua while announcing her demise earlier in the day, remembered Muthoni as a hero who led the Agikuyu community in their fight for freedom.

Gachagua prayed for God's comfort and strength to the Kirima family as they mourned the Field Marshal.

"We remain indebted to these great heroes and heroines for the Sacrifice to liberate our land. May God Rest Her in Eternal peace and give strength to her family to bear the loss," he said.

Last month, Ruto hosted the late Muthoni together with General Mathenge's Mirugu's wife (Miriam Muthoni) at Sagana State Lodge.

In April 2022, field marshal Muthoni wa Kirima shaved her dreadlocks.

She said the signature dreadlocks that flowed past her waist were a valuable reminder of her sacrifice for the country even after Kenya gained independence in 1963.

The locks that she has had since 1952 were shaved by Mama Ngina Kenyatta.
