Inspector General Japhet Koome has told off critics over threats to take him to the International Criminal Court over deaths witnessed during last month's demos.

On Tuesday, Koome said the police have a mandate by law to protect Kenyans and will not give in to threats.

"Propaganda headliners will not scare us. They can continue to threaten us of going to ICC court and that has no implication on us in terms of our commitment to serve and protect our country," he said.

Defending the police actions during the demos, Koome said that the police have a role to protect life and property.

"I want to tell Kenyans that as National Police Service, we have a role to protect life and property. We have a responsibility to ensure our country is secure and safe and it is a mandate we are going to discharge without fear or favour," he added.

Last month, the Azimio la Umoja coalition called on the ICC to intervene in the ongoing situation in the country.

National Assembly Minority leader Opiyo Wandayi had asked the ICC to take an interest in the cases of brutality emerging amid the ongoing anti-government protests.

"We have noticed an unprecedented level of police brutality on innocent Kenyans. We want the international community to take serious note of these happenings to hold into account the perpetrators of these crimes," he said then.

"We are asking the ICC to take a keener interest in the Kenyan situation because what we are witnessing is crimes against humanity."
