State to reduce training, licences fee for boda boda riders

Boda boda operators will soon pay less for training and licencing as the state plans to reduce cost of the two services.

President William Ruto on Monday announced that the move will help reduce the number of boda boda accidents and deaths.

"The big challenge is riders have no training and have no licences. We have talked to NYS, I'll talk to Parliament and the Council of Governors so that we have the training," he said.

In his proposal, Ruto said that the operators would be charged Sh2,500 for training and licence fees.

"I'm told training is Sh8,000 and the license is Sh3,050.The CS (Kipchumba Murkomen) go plan yourself. I want this training plus licencing which is 10,000 reduced to Sh2,500," he added.

The President added that the National Yout Service, Ministry of Transport and NTSA will ensure riders have training and licences.

In addition, Ruto has disclosed that in the past 10 years, he has spent more than Sh250 million fundraising for boda boda associations.

Speaking on Monday during the launch of Boda boda Care, Ruto said the funds used were from his personal pocket.

He noted that during this time, he conducted about 200 fundraisers for the same.

"Nimefanya harambee kama mia mbili za watu wa bodaboda. Na nimetumia pesa zangu karibu miaka kumi iliyopita, shilingi millioni mia mbili hamsini katika sector ya bodaboda," Ruto said.
