Crime buster Ahmed Rashid has denied claims by the police that he interfered with prosecution witnesses in his murder case.

Rashid was charged with two counts of murder for the death of two boys in Eastleigh in 2017.

The prosecution had claimed that being a police officer he has influence and the witnesses had become fearful of him thus fleeing from Eastleigh.

However, Rashid in response to that says after his interdiction, he no longer enjoys the powers and privileges of a police officer and as such have no access whatsoever to the use of firearms, arrest and detain persons or properties.

He also says that he never instructed anyone to demonstrate saying he was on leave in Garissa when the demonstrations against this prosecution were happening in Nairobi.

The state had told the court that the demonstrations at Milimani law courts had made some of their witnesses apprehensive of their safety in Eastleigh.

He says the witnesses were not known to him and if anything, there exists a witness protection agency and the state has the necessary machinery in place to protect their witnesses if they are apprehensive of any threat to life.

“I am not a flight risk and I have a permanent abode in Kenya at Mlango and Garissa and have no intention of fleeing and leaving my family alone,” reads court documents.

Rashid through his lawyer Danstan Omari is also seeking to cross-examine Officer Benedict Otieno on the affidavit he filed opposing his release on bail.

The notice to cross-examine filed in court states “Take notice that the accused person’s advocate shall seek to cross-examine Benedict Otieno on his evidence in the affidavit dated April 17 2023 when the matter will be slated for hearing of bail application”.

The application opposing his release on bail will be heard tomorrow Friday.

Rashid is currently out on a temporary bond term as he waits to rule on whether the court will grant him bail or not.
