Two arrested for growing bhang in Machakos

Two people have been arrested for allegedly growing bhang in Mwala, Machakos County.

Musyimi Ndivo, 39, and Matata Kanyiva, 40, were smoked out from their hideouts in Manyatta village, Wamunyu location by officers from Yathui police station on Friday.

A third suspect, Mutungi Jass, escaped the police dragnet.

The swoop was led by Mwala subcounty police commander Nancy Jerebon with the assistance of Yathui Officer Commanding Station Mark Kaberia.

Machakos police boss Joseph Ole Napeiyan said 336 bhang plants weighing 20kgs were confiscated during the raid.

He said the consignment had an approximated street value of Sh38,000.

Napeiyan said the raid happened at 6.40am after police Yathui police station were tipped off. The report was filed at 9.30am.

"Acting on an intelligence report from community policing members that there was a person cultivating bhang in Kaitha sublocation in Wamunyu location. Officers from Yathui police station led by Mwala Subcounty police commander Nancy Jerebon, Yathui OCS Mark Kaberia and Kaitha assistant chief David Soso rushed to the scene and managed to arrest two suspects,"Napeiyan told the Star on Friday.

Napeiyan said Ndivo was arrested after he was found to have cultivated bhang in a potion of land.

A total of 123 bhang plants weighing about 4kgs with approximate street value of Sh16,000 were uprooted from his farm.

In Kanyiva's farm, police uprooted a total of eight bhang plants from planted in jerrycan containers with an approximate street value of Sh200.

Napeiyan said a total of 205 bhang plants weighing approximately 8kgs with estimated value of Sh22,000 was confiscated from a quarter acre of land belonging to Jass who was still at large by press time.

"The exhibits have been preserved and suspects placed in custody awaiting to be arraigned on May 2," Napeiyan said.

He said police have launched investigations into incident.
