Four people were on Wednesday arrested by police and a bhang haul with an estimated street value of Sh4.5 million seized in Nairobi's Utawala area.
The quartet was arrested and consignment seized at a compound in Mihang’o Immaculate area. They include three men and a woman.
Two Toyota Probox vehicles with suspected fake registration numbers were also impounded during the swoop.
Kayole subcounty police commander Paul Wambugu said the arrests were made by Transnational Police Unit detectives based at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters.
“This morning, our Special Police Unit, the Transnational Police Unit based at the DCI headquarters acting on intelligence information which they have been pursuing for long were able to net four drug peddlers who are already with us,” Wambugu said.
Wambugu addressed reporters at the scene of crime hours after the suspects were arrested. He said the bhang was transported to Nairobi from Migori County.
He said the four suspects led the officers to the scene, a house within a residential court in Mihang’o.
“The peddlers had their motor vehicles namely Probox that bear registration number plates we suspect to be fake. But, further investigations will be done,” Wambugu said.
The police boss said inside the two vehicles were nine sacks of unprocessed bhang, while six and a half more bags of the same outlawed substance were recovered from a store in the house.
“There was also a briefcase full of bhang and a small 25kg sack which contained the substance. We were also able to get two weighing machines and materials used to pack the bhang,” Wambugu said.
“The owner of the store and a house keeper have also been arrested. So, at the moment, we have the four suspects who are going to be interrogated and investigated over the said narcotic substance,” Wambugu said.
He said the matter was being handled by sleuths from the DCI headquarters. Wambugu congratulated the officers for the work he termed as well done.
He said the officers have endeared themselves to pursue the trafficking of narcotic drugs leading to the swoop.
“As you all know, our officers are up to the task. We are pursuing all those criminals who we know and those we don’t know.
"We are promising the public that we will do our best to make sure that all those drugs that are within our area are netted and those who are dealing in it are dealt with according to the law,” he said.
Wambugu asked the public to be conscious of what happens in their neighborhoods.
“We have many people residing within this residential area and they have been seeing unfamiliar movements that they ought to have communicated to our local police,” Wambugu said.
He said they will enhance police-public relations so that at the end of the day, they are able to get information as promptly as required.
Wambugu urged the public to volunteer intelligent information to security agencies so as to rid the area of crime.
“Share information with the police and we will work on it. People should have confidence in the system and support the system,” he said.
