Abdi Mohamed will be the new Managing Director and CEO at Absa Bank Kenya effective May 1, 2023.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Board chairman Charles Muchene expressed confidence in Mohamed's leadership.

This is owing to his experience of more than 28 years working in different capacities in Absa Group.

Muchene said Mohamed's leadership will be crucial as Absa continues to build on its growth momentum to positively impacts all its stakeholders.

"The Board is pleased to welcome Abdi back home, particularly at a time when the banking industry is experiencing increased digitalisation, innovation, and significant shifts in demography and consumer behaviour," he said.

"Within this context, Abdi will steer the Bank’s next strategic horizon where we seek to accelerate our shared growth agenda as an inclusive brand that is a force for good in our communities."

Mohamed will take over from Yusuf Omari, who has been serving as interim MD and CEO, and resume his role as Chief Finance Officer (CFO).

The interim CFO, Moses Muthui will also resume his role as the Bank's Chief Strategy Officer and Financial Director for Corporate and Investment Banking.

The Board commended both Omari and Muthui for taking on additional roles over the last six months.

It also thanked the leadership team at large for sustaining the growth momentum to the end of the last financial last year and into 2023.

Mohamed is committed to continue delivering value to the bank's community and collaborating with stakeholders toward achieving sustainable economic growth.

"It is a great honour and privilege to be asked to lead the next phase of growth and transformation in Absa Kenya," he said.

"Personally, I have been on a long and rewarding career journey with Absa Group in Kenya and internationally, and it is exciting to be back to Absa Kenya where my banking career started."
