Raila Odinga's Azimio coalition has written to the police formally notifying them of their intended street protests on Tuesday, May 2.

In a letter to the Officer Commanding Nairobi Central Police Station, the party said it will deliver a written petition to the Office of the President at the Harambee House during the course of the march.

The letter written by Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition party chairman Wickliffe Oparanya said the protests will be held along the busy Moi Avenue within the Central Business District.

"In the course of the said meeting/procession, we intend to submit a written petition to Harambe House, Nairobi,'' Azimio said in the letter dated April 24.

The Opposition outfit notes in the letter that processions will also take place along major city streets of Kenyatta Avenue, Haile Selassie Avenue and Harambee Avenue on the material day.

"For avoidance of doubt, this is not an application for permission as none is contemplated under Article 37 of the Constitution," Oparanya said.

"We therefore request your office to deploy enough security officers to guarantee security of attendees and exercise crown control."

Article 37 of the Constitution grants Kenyans the right to assemble, demonstrate, picket and petition.

"Every person has the right, peaceably and unarmed, to assemble, to demonstrate, to picket, and to present petitions to public authorities," the law states.
