Azimio leader Raila Odinga's quest to lead his supporters into the Central Business District was on Thursday afternoon thwarted by anti-riot police at the Pipeline area.

His convoy was teargassed forcing protesters to scamper for safety shortly after Raila dared to lead protesters into the CBD.

And as if in solidarity with the escaping demonstrators, tenants in the high-rise apartments started pouring water down on them seemingly to help them wash off teargas from their eyes.

Raila had moments earlier said their resolve to enter the CBD was unstoppable.

"Hatuwezi kutishwa (We can't be intimidated)," he said.

"Hata wakiweka askari ngapi, Azimio itapita. Tunaleta sauti ya ukombozi ya kukomboa Kenya kutoka utawala wa kiimla, utawala ya kimabavu, ya udanganyifu. Tunataka utawala safi, wakenya wanataka ukombozi."

(No matter the number of police they deploy, Azimio will make headway. We are bringing the voice of redemption from a dictatorial administration. We want clean leadership, Kenyans want liberation)

However, he had to take a detour and head to the Eastern Bypass.
