A member of the National Police Reserve was shot and seriously wounded in a clash with bandits in Samburu village.

This was as he fought off with 15 bandits who had raided Lolmolog village in Lolmolog location and stole 150 goats on Sunday evening.

The reservist confronted the gang but was shot and injured in the process.

He sustained an injury in the thigh as police joined in the fight. The attackers managed to flee and left the animals, police said.

The victim was later rescued and taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Locals said the attacks have been on the rise and want more personnel to be deployed there.

On Monday, 124 National Police Reservists joined the National Police Service following the completion of their basic training and subsequent pass out which was held at Ltungai Conservancy Camp in Samburu County.

This is the same area the attack happened.

This is the second cohort of trainees to pass out after 170 NPRs were inducted in a similar exercise held on December 16, 2022, at the same camp.

Rift Valley Regional Police Commander, Tom Mboya Odero, presided over the graduation and urged the reservists to demonstrate high levels of professionalism and integrity in their service delivery to the nation.

He affirmed that the recruits are fully prepared to be incorporated into the multi-agency security framework to deal firmly and decisively with the security menace.

He said cattle rustling and banditry pose existential ramifications to security in the region.

The government announced plans to restore NPRs in 14 counties that are prone to bandits attacks.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki said the number will be enhanced from the previous 10,000 reservists who had been designated in the regions facing insecurity.

“The decision to withdraw the nearly 10,000 reservists abruptly and without basis has caused great loss of innocent lives and deprivation of property,” he said.

“The new measure will go a long way in supplementing the work of the specialised formed units in preventing and thwarting the security threats posed by marauding bandits.”
