Women MPs have condemned the impeachment of Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza and appealed to the Senate to quash her ouster bid.

The legislators said the impeachment is uncalled for and an indication of malice and feminism.

"We condemn the action by the 67 MCAs. She was just 115 days in office and was yet to start work properly. We ask the Senate to overturn her removal," Vihiga Woman Rep Beatrice Adagala said.

Addressing a press conference at Parliament Buildings, Adagala further termed the allegations by the MCAs as baseless.

"She was an independent candidate. She has no MCA and was not allied to Azimio or Kenya Kwanza during the elections," she said.

She added that laws must be put in place to prevent MCAs from holding governors hostage.

"We appeal to the Senate to reverse the ouster and protect Kawira from such ill motives that are likely to be the trend in other counties in near future," stated Adagala.

Narok Woman Rep Rebecca Tonkei said Meru County should go for fresh elections if MCAs do not want to work with the governor.

"I am told signature collection is already going on. This should continue because the ward reps must also seek a fresh mandate," she said.

She accused the MCAs of not having the interest of the Meru people at heart.

Busia Woman Rep regretted that Kawira was impeached even before she had known her way around the office.

"The speed is questionable. It just tells you there is malice in the whole process," she added.

Nominated Senator Beth Syengo termed the impeachment as an attack on women's leadership and girl child.

Kawira’s fate will be determined by the 11-member committee or the Senate in plenary, where senators will either uphold or dismiss the allegations against the governor within 10 days.

House will sit next week to uphold or dismiss the impeachment of Kawira.

All 67 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) present during the impeachment session voted to remove her over abuse of office claims.

Abogeta West MCA and Minority Whip Dennis Kiogora accused the governor of nepotism, illegal appointments, unlawful dismissals, usurpation of constitutional and statutory functions, incitement, bullying, vilification and misleading campaigns against other leaders.

Other accusations are forced entry into the assembly and mobilising unlawful riots against MCAs, violation of public finance management laws and misconduct relating to the nomination of CECs.
