Meru CEC nominee Casty Micheni has associated the wrangles between Governor Kawira Mwangaza and the MCAs with the patriarchal social norms.
The MCAs on Wednesday impeached Mwangaza, making her the first governor to be impeached since the August 9 general election.
Some 67 out of 69 MCAs voted to impeach Mwangaza in a motion tabled by DMK Kiogora MCA for Abogeta West and minority party whip.
Micheni who had been nominated by Mwangaza as the CEC for youth and gender docket was rejected by the county assembly alongside six other nominees in the ongoing wrangle between the governor and the MCAs.
She said Meru is a highly patriarchal society hence some people can't believe a woman is in charge.
“I know there are people who have not believed that now we have a woman governor in Meru county, yet it is a patriarchal society. Meru got a surprise,” she said.
“If you look at the whole issue, Kawira was not expected to win especially among the elite and the fact that she was an independent candidate she looked like she didn’t have any chances but wananchi made her the governor."
On November 30, a Meru court halted her first impeachment motion.
Justice Wamae Cherere said the motion did not follow the correct procedure in initiating an ouster bid against Mwangaza.
“We have a team that has not believed that it is a woman; some people are still in denial that it is a woman and the earlier they believe it is the better for the sake of the mwananchi of Meru county.”
The MCAs impeached her over alleged gross misconduct, the appointment of her husband to the county office and wrongly dismissing county officers.
