The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission on Tuesday evening arrested a senior sergeant at the Nairobi City Council over accusations of soliciting bribes.

The officer, attached to the environment section regulating waste dumping, had allegedly solicited a bribe of Sh100,000.

The complainant was asked to pay the amount so that three of his employees should not be arraigned for charges related to the dumping of waste.

EACC said the three were arrested on Saturday and taken to custody at Central Police Station.

They were released on a cash bail of Sh5,000 each on Sunday and are scheduled to appear before the Nairobi City Court on Tuesday.

The suspect is said to have demanded the bribe on Sunday to order their release.

The complainant denied the same and asked his employee to present themselves to court on Tuesday.

However, on arriving at the court on Tuesday, the names of the three were not called and no charges were read.

Further, the enforcement officer from City Hall was not in the court.

This prompted a visit to the officer by the complainant.

"When the Complainant reached the suspect’s office, the suspect insisted on getting the bribe he had demanded so as to “finish” the matter, “clear” the three employees and “waive” the criminal charges he allegedly had against them," EACC said.

The complainant reported the matter to the anti-graft body leading to an investigation.

The commission launched an operation that led to the officer's arrest while receiving Sh30,000 of the demanded bribe.

The suspect was taken to Kilimani Police Station and later transferred to EACC police station where he recorded a statement.

He was released on cash bail pending investigations.

The commission has lauded the complainant for rejecting the bribe demand and urged the public to emulate him.

"On their part, citizens should endeavour to always operate within the dictates of the law and promptly report to EACC any public official seeking to extort money from them."
