A farmers lobby has said they advocate for incorporation of GMO crops into into Kenya's agricultural sector, to boost production.

Members of the Society for Biotech Farmers of Kenya also advocated for incorporation of new biotechnology tools.

"We convey our utmost gratitude to President William Ruto and the Cabinet for taking a bold step to lift the ban and allow us access to climate-resilient high yielding seeds," SOBIFAK chairperson Daniel Magondu said on Wednesday.

He said Kenya's over reliance on conventional seeds has placed farming into vulnerability due to adverse affects of climate change.

Magondu said as farmers, they have resolved to be left out of GMO politics.

He distanced themselves from a group called Kenyan Peasants League saying the group " does not understand the plight of smallholder farmers."

Magondu said if they did, they would have been in the forefront advocating for adoption of improved seeds.

The official said the introduction of BT cotton in 2019 has brought impressive returns to farmers.

"We call on the government to provide us with BT maize so that we can sustainably address low production challenges with our staple crop," Magondu said.

He urged the government to move with speed to address misinformation and perception surrounding GMO.

The official also called on the ministry of agriculture to revamp extension services and teach farmers best agronomic practices.

"We request that the minister for Agriculture spares a slot for Biotech Farmers representation in the proposed fibre crops authority leadership," Magondu said.
