Ministry links Nairobi cholera outbreak to Kiambu wedding

In the last 24 hours, 27 recovered cholera patients were discharged

The ministry of health has associated the current cholera outbreak in Kiambu with a wedding that took place in October.

According to the ministry, the index case was reported on October 8 following a wedding in Kiambu where more than 50 people were in attendance.

Several people developed acute watery diarrhoea and later confirmed to be cholera.

So far, 15 out of the 17 sub-counties in Nairobi have reported cases.

The data by the ministry shows Lang’ata and Mathare sub-counties have reported 13 cases each, Westlands has 10, Dagoretti North 23, Kibra and Embakasi South 7 cases each, Starehe and Embakasi North 2 cases each, Ruaka and Embakasi West six cases each, embakasi Central three, while Embakasi South has one case.

Others include Kasarani with eight cases, Kamukunji with 17, Makadara and Embakasi East with 14 cases each and Roysambu with 12.

Currently, 40 people are admitted to various facilities with Mbagathi having the highest number with 17, Metropolitan with 6, two at the Nairobi Women's hospital, one at KNH an Avenue Parklands, Uzima Hospital, and NCCK Huruma among others.

“In the last 24 hours, 27 cholera patients recovered and were discharged bringing the total number of recoveries and discharges for cholera to 71,” the ministry says.

The ministry has now enhanced surveillance, especially at the community level and searches for active cases while contact tracing is also going on in an effort to pick more cases.

Distribution of Commodities such as chlorine granules, cholera beds, medical supplies and non-pharmacies also going on in an effort to help contain the outbreak.

In the last 24 hours, Nairobi has reported five new cholera cases. Fortunately, no death has been reported in Nairobi over the last 24 hours.

The total number of deaths reported since the beginning of the outbreak stands at eight.
