Eight people have died in Nairobi due to the cholera outbreak, the Ministry of Health has said.

Six died at the hospital while two deaths occurred in the community.

According to a statement by the ministry, Embakasi East sub-county is the worst hit by the outbreak with the region recording four cases in the last 24 hours alone.

To date, 160 cholera cases have been recorded in the capital city with the ministry saying that a total of 13 cases are imported transmissions.

From the data, 91 are men while 69 are women.

“More males compared to females have been affected by cholera, with the age category of years 21 to 30 being the most affected today, followed by 51-60 years,” the ministry says.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with Vibrio cholerae bacteria.

People can get sick when they swallow food or water contaminated with cholera bacteria.

The infection is often mild or without symptoms, but can sometimes be severe and life-threatening.
