The Jubilee administration irregularly spent a whooping Sh55 billion between July and August, a petitioner has told Parliament.

In his petition, Stephen Mutoro claims lack of accountability and transparency in the run up to the transition saw the government engage in misuse of public funds.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula told the MPs that the petitioner is concerned that such a colossal amount was incurred at a time the country was grappling with huge public debt, high inflation and high cost of living.

“I wish to report to the House that I have received a petition regarding the spending of Sh55 billion by the Jubilee administration without approval of the National Assembly,” Wetangula said.

Mutoro called on the auditor general to launch a forensic audit on all the public expenditure.

He says his efforts to have the matter addressed by the Treasury has been unfruitful.

The petitioner says a probe will prevent similar incidences that might occur in future, if unchecked, leading to taxpayers being overburdened.

He is also calling for an amendment of relevant laws to bar the outgoing administration from spending any such public funds irregularly.

The matter has now been committed to the public petitions committee.
