A research trial at UK's King's College on the effects of bhang on the human brain has opened an avenue for people to smoke the drug and get paid for it.

More than 200 million people globally use cannabis daily but little is known about its effects on the smokers' brain.

The Daily Mail reports that researchers at the London-based institution are targeting 6,000 volunteers to participate in the Cannabis & Me research project.

"The researchers said it is 'paramount' to understand the science behind the drug," the media outlet said.

"Scientists will look into how the drug impacts their brains as 'shockingly' little is known about its effects," it added.

The paper said participants must be London residents aged between 18 to 45 and should either be currently using the drug, have used it less than three times or have never tried it before.

Successful participants will be paid £50 (Sh7,300) after undergoing online and face-to-face assessment.

The use and possession of recreational cannabis is illegal in the UK, regardless of the age of the user.

Back home in Kenya, talks about possible legalisation of weed for medicinal use gained momentum in the run-up to the August 9 general elections.

Roots Party presidential candidate George Wajackoya presented a manifesto that contained a myriad of controversial proposals including legalisation of bhang had he won the polls.

He finished third with o.44 per cent of the vote and with the loss went the prospect of Kenya joining the list of countries that have approved the medicinal use of cannabis.
