Suspect in the murder of Ida Odinga bodyguard Colins Okundi will be remanded at the Kisumu Maximum Prison awaiting mental assessment.
This after the Senior Resident Magistrate Beryl Omollo granted the prosecution application to have the suspect detained for the process to be undertaken.
The magistrate noted that the assessment will be done at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu.
In her application, Prosecutor Vitsengwa Proscovia wanted the suspect detained at the Kisumu maximum prison until the assessment is done.
She said the case is serious and they want to establish the mental status of the accused person first before anything else.
However, this was opposed by the accused lawyer Onkendi John Lewis.
Onkendi said his understanding was that the mental assessment had taken place.
He said his client was ready for plea-taking on Monday.
"The Prosecution had 14 days since the arrest took place. I, therefore, oppose this application. Let my client take a plea," he said.
However, while responding to this, the Prosecutor noted that a murder case cannot proceed without determining the mental state of the accused person.
"It's therefore proper for the same to be done," she said adding that the suspect advocate's move to oppose the same is misinformed.
The senior resident Magistrate Omollo granted the application.
She further noted that the suspect will appear in court on November 3 for plea taking.
