Ida Odinga's bodyguard who was shot dead early Friday in Kisumu had nothing to do with the woman who was present at the time of the incident.

Emerging details from the investigations indicate that Barack Onyango Oduor was not the boyfriend of the woman identified as Marilyn Marion Ouma.

Detectives probing the murder said Oduor, 44, was only invited to Dondez Bar by his friend identified as Donar Kajwang for a drink.

"He had nothing to do with the lady. He only joined them for a drink on the request of his friend Kajwang. It was Kajwang who was with the lady," Kisumu county police commander Alphonse Kimanthi told the Star on Sunday.

The motive of the killing remains unclear.

Kimanthi said the slain officer arrived at the joint on the request of Kajwang.

Is it possible he was shot while defending his friend?

"What we now know is that he wasn't having any love relationship with the lady. He was caught in a crossfire involving those other two men present at the scene of crime," the county police boss revealed.

The man suspected to have fired the fatal shot was identified as Collins Oulo Okundi.

He is alleged to have confronted the slain officer who was in the company of Kajwang and the lady.

The suspect is alleged to have shot Oduor twice on the head, killing him on the spot during the 3.30am incident that happened at Victoria estate in Kisumu’s Uzima area.

He also reportedly shot Kajwang on the leg. Kajwang is recuperating at the Agha Khan hospital in Kisumu where he was admitted following the shooting.

Marion, at whose home the shooting occurred, reported the matter to the police at Obunga police station.

She was interrogated for long hours on Friday by the sleuths probing the matter at the Kisumu Central police station.

She told the police that they left Dondez Bar and restaurant along Kisumu-Kakamega road at around 3am as they retired for the night after partying.

She said that the suspect appeared at her home and a scuffle ensued leading to the fatal shooting of the officer.

This revelation emerged as police arrested Okundi on Sunday in Eldoret.

A pistol was recovered from him during the arrest that took police three days of hot pursuit.

An inventory prepared by the DCI, Eldoret West, under whose jurisdiction the arrest was made indicates that Okundi was found with a Jericho pistol bearing Kenya police serial number and believed to be the firearm stolen from the deceased officer.

A magazine and seven rounds of 9mm ammunition were also recovered from him.

On Sunday, the family said that the officer will be buried on October 28 at his rural home in Bondo, Siaya county.

According to his elder brother Mike Adhola, family and friends have been meeting in Nairobi and at his rural home to plan the burial.
