President William Ruto has pledged to construct at least 200,000 houses in the next one year even as his government is keen on implementing the housing program.

Speaking on Tuesday while attending the Soweto East zone Social Housing Programme in Kibra, the president said the programme will pay special attention to slum arrears.

"I am here today to launch 4,000 houses that will be yours. We will ensure that the largest known slum in Africa, Kibera, will be known as the largest real estate in Kenya," Ruto said. 

He spoke while launching the housing  Programme of Soweto B in Kibra.

Ruto said that due to undeveloped infrastructure and the increased rate of urbanisation in Kenya, most of the people who live in the cities and townships are in slums.

He pledged to fail the housing programme in addressing the shelter needs of slum dwellers.

"In the next one year, we will have constructed 200,000 houses,"  he said.

He said the housing programme will also create jobs for 2500 residents living in the slums.

Ruto said the employment opportunities will uplift the lives of the people and cushion them from the high cost of living.
