Cabinet secretary nominee for Roads, Transport and Public works, Kipchumba Murkomen has blamed the former regime for the stalled road projects in the country.

Speaking on Wednesday, he said the roads have stalled because the contractors have not yet been paid for the work done.

"This government is inheriting Sh140 billion in pending payments. Contractors have not been paid and that is why we have many stalled road projects," Murkomen said.

He spoke when he appeared before the National Assembly Committee on Appointments for vetting.

The Elgeyo Marakwet Senator gave an example of the much-awaited Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) which has never been launched.

"The project is not complete due to financial issues," Murkomen stated.

The implementation of the much-awaited Bus Rapid Transit has been slowed by the lack of resources.

Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority CEO Francis Gitau told the Star last month that the contractor has slowed the implementation of major works as the National Treasury is yet to release money.

“The contractor slowed down works in June,” Gitau said then.

He said Sh200 million is yet to be paid to the contractor.
