According to NTV, Kalonzo dropped the bid after his party's National Executive Council said it would be humiliating.

On Tuesday, the Wiper council convened at the party's headquarters and convinced their party leader to drop his bid and focus on building his brand.

Most MPs believe that numbers don't favour the Azimio One Kenya coalition given that most of them have defected to Kenya Kwanza.

Both coalitions are planning parliamentary group sessions for Thursday when the 13th parliament opens.

After members of both houses are sworn-in, the first order of business will be to elect their speakers.

Kalonzo was among 15 individuals who had so far picked nomination papers for the post of Senate speaker.

The former vice president had also taken papers for the National Assembly speaker seat in what appeared to be a multi-bet for the Azimio principal.

President-elect William Ruto’s allies’, former Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi, and former Mombasa governor candidate Hassan Omar had also collected papers as of 2.45pm on Tuesday.

However, the race would only take shape after knowing who among them will have returned the papers by Wednesday, 2 pm deadline.

Returned nomination papers will also be scrutinised to ascertain candidates meet the set qualification to run for powerful position.

The new Senate speaker will succeed Ken Lusaka who was elected Bungoma governor in the August 9, General election, while the National Assembly speaker will succeed Justin Muturi.
