Kalonzo picks papers for both Senate, National Assembly speaker

MPs will elect the speakers soon after their swearing-in on Thursday.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka is among the 15 individuals who have so far picked nomination papers for the post of Senate speaker.

The former vice president had also taken papers for the National Assembly speaker seat in what appears to be a multi-bet for the Azimio leader.

President-elect William Ruto’s allies’, former Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi, and former Mombasa governor candidate Hassan Omar had also collected the papers as of 2.45pm on Tuesday.

Former nominated senator Isaac Mwaura, who served in the speaker’s panel in the last panel as has also taken the papers. He is also an ally of the president-elect.

In the Senate, Kalonzo was among the 15 people who had picked nomination papers for the position of the speaker and two for the deputy speaker slot.

Other individuals who have so far picked the papers are Isaac Aluoch, Jared Oundo, George Bush, Dr Rodgers Manana, Beatrice Kinyua, Dorothy Kemunto and Jecinta Lesiangiki.

Josephat Mutua, Mohamud Halake, Michael Gichuri and Joshua Boit also picked the nomination papers in Parliament.

For the deputy speaker slot, Senators-elect Karungo wa Thangwa (Kiambu) and Kathuri Murungi (Meru) had picked the papers.

However, the race would only take shape after knowing who among them will have returned the papers by Wednesday, 2 pm deadline.

The new speaker will succeed Ken Lusaka who was elected Bungoma governor in the August 9, General Election.
