Azimio fronts Kalonzo for Senate Speaker position

MPs-elect met at a hotel in Kajiado county during which they endorsed Kalonzo

Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has been picked by the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance coalition to vie for the Senate Speaker's position.

Azimio is said to have overturned the Wiper party's decision that had advised Kalonzo not to vie for the seat.

By the time of going to the press, Kalonzo had arrived at parliament buildings to submit his papers for the post.

Azimio MPs-elect met at a hotel in Kajiado county during which they endorsed Kalonzo for the seat.

The first parliamentary seating will take place on Thursday following the gazettement of the sitting by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua and Uhuru were present at the Kajiado meeting.

Other individuals who had so far picked the papers are Isaac Aluoch, Jared Oundo, George Bush, Dr Rodgers Manana, Beatrice Kinyua, Dorothy Kemunto and Jecinta Lesiangiki.

Kenya Kwanza coalition on the other hand fronted former Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi as their candidate.

Former Mombasa gubernatorial candidate Hassan Omar dropped his bid to become the next Senate speaker after discussions with President-elect, William Ruto and other Kenya Kwanza leaders.

“I do not object to this, the position was reserved for Coast and hereby withdraw my candidature,” he said.

“I trust that all senators will support my brother Kingi as the sole Kenya Kwanza candidate as agreed upon by all of us.”

The race is to take shape after knowing who among them will have returned the papers by Wednesday, 2 pm deadline.

Returned nomination papers will also be scrutinized to ascertain candidates meet the set qualification to run for powerful positions.

The new speaker will succeed Ken Lusaka who was elected Bungoma governor in the August 9, General Election.
