Rainfall is expected over several parts of the highlands west of Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin and central and south Rift Valley, the latest forecast has shown.

Kenya Meteorological Department director Dr David Gikungu says rains are expected over a few areas in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley and North-Western Kenya.

"Isolated storms and possible flooding may occur over some parts of the Highlands West of the Rift Valley and North-Western Kenya," he says.

Gikungu in the forecast released on Tuesday said occasional cold and cloudy conditions, at times accompanied by light rains, are expected over the Highlands East of the Rift Valley as well as over some parts of the South-eastern lowlands.

Such conditions are also expected in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley and the Central and South Rift Valley.

From Wednesday to Sunday morning, rains are expected in Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo and Uasin Gishu.

Also Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and WestPokot counties.

Showers and thunderstorms over several places will be experienced from Wednesday to Sunday in the afternoon, with minimum temperatures ranging from nine degrees celsius to 27 degrees celsius.

In Turkana and Samburu counties, rains are expected over several regions on Wednesday and Thursday morning before paving way for sunny intervals on Friday till Sunday.

On Wednesday and Thursday, showers and thunderstorms will be experienced over a few places before paving way for sunny intervals on Friday till Sunday.

Temperatures in the two counties will be in the ranges of 11 to 35 degrees celsius.

Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka and Nairobi counties will have rains over a few places on Wednesday morning.

Cloudy conditions are expected on Thursday morning up to Saturday before paving way for sunny intervals on Sunday.

Nights will be partly cloudy with temperatures ranging from seven degrees celsius to 25 degrees celsius.

Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo counties will experience sunny intervals throughout.

Temperatures in the affected counties will range from 14 degrees celsius to 36 degrees celsius.

Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta counties will be cloudy with sunny intervals from Wednesday morning to Sunday.

Afternoons will be characterised by sunny intervals with temperatures ranging from nine degrees celsius to 30 degrees celsius.

Sunny conditions will be experienced from Wednesday to Sunday both morning and afternoon in Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale counties.

Temperatures will range from 20 degrees celsius to 30 degrees celsius.

The Meteorological Department has however said most parts of the country will receive depressed October-November-December 2022 short rains.

This will be driven by cooler than average Sea Surface Temperatures over the western Equatorial Indian Ocean (adjacent to the East African coastline).

It will also be coupled with warmer than average SSTs over the eastern Equatorial Indian Ocean (adjacent to Australia).

This constitutes a negative Indian Ocean Dipole that is unfavourable for enhanced rainfall over most of East Africa.

Additionally, the SSTs over much of the Central and Eastern Equatorial Pacific Ocean are below average, suggesting the presence of La Niña conditions.

LaNiña conditions are likely to persist throughout the October-November-December season.
