Security tops agenda list as Isiolo governor Guyo takes office

Security, unity and development topped the list of the newly elected Isiolo governor Abdi Guyo as he took over the office on Thursday.

The swearing-in ceremony was characterised by pomp and colour as the new governor committed himself to initiating reforms in the county.

He is the only Jubilee governor candidate who was elected in the August 9, polls.

The event which took place at Isiolo High School attracted guests from various counties including Nairobi.

Justice Richard Mwongo presided over the ceremony and was assisted by Magistrate Lucy Mutai.

Governor Guyo took oath beside his wife Habiba Galgalo Hassan followed by his deputy James Lowaso who was also with his spouse.

The Jubilee candidate clinched the Isiolo governor seat after garnering 28,946 votes. 

Guyo and Lowasa signed a certificate of inauguration as he received the respective county symbols, including the flag, coat of arms, the Constitution, and the public seal, a sign of transfer of power and authority.

County Secretary Ahmed, Galgalo handed over the instruments of power to Guyo as the outgoing governor was absent.

While giving his speech, Guyo promised to end insecurity and clashes in Isiolo.

“Insecurity has been a major problem facing Isiolo county. I will work with the National Government to build a buffer zone between Isiolo and Wajir, Marsabit and Samburu counties to end recurrent cattle rustling and killings,” he said.

The Governor called upon his counterparts from neighbouring counties to work together in ensuring banditry and insecurities are addressed.

“It is time we leaders from the North come together to ensure that our people die because of insecurity,” Guyo added.

Despite of the political affiliation differences, the Governor promised to work with all leaders in the county.

Guyo also said his administration will prioritize road projects and ensure the Isiolo-Merti road which has been in a dilapidated state for years is tamarcked.

“Let this road be a legacy that we give to the people of Isiolo once we are elected into office,” he added.

Guyo also greatly appreciated the residents of Isiolo for having trust in his leadership despite the awful and unprintable insults spewed by his competitors.

He assured the residents of Isiolo County that he will be the Governor for all, and uniting the great people of Isiolo will be his top priority.

The Governor also assured the residents of Isiolo that He will be guided by the principles of governance saying corruption and embezzlement of county funds will be a thing of the past.

His deputy Lowasa pledged to work hand in hand with the Governor to ensure they deliver their manifesto.

The duo had revealed a 14-point manifesto during the campaign.

"The Governor and will ensure that services are delivered to the people of Isiolo," Lowasa added.

Other elected leaders present were Senator Fatuma Dullo and Woman Rep Mumina Bonaya also vowed to work closely with Guyo in changing the living standard of the residents of Isiolo.

Issues pertaining to youth and women empowerment, initialization of advanced educational institutions, title deeds, and security and rehabilitation facilities made a greater part of their speech.
