Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha on Tuesday said day schools will be closed on August 29 in areas where polls were postponed.

The schools in Kakamega, Mombasa and six other areas are to resume on August 30 after the polls.

Speaking during the commissioning of new CBC classrooms at Mutuini Secondary School in Dagoretti sub-county, Nairobi, Magoha said boarding schools in those areas will not be affected.

"We have also agreed as a government that the boarding schools shall not be closed. Those that are polling centres, the children will remain in dormitories, the field and in the libraries," Magoha said.

"As far as day schools are concerned, I think one day is not bad enough, the students can stay at home on Monday, August 29, and report back on Tuesday," he added.

This comes as the IEBC announced August 29 as the day it will conduct elections in areas where the polls were postponed.

IEBC chair Wafula Chebukati said the commission was fully prepared to hold the elections on Monday after postponing the exercise twice.

"We will hold the elections on Monday unless there are other suggestions from you," Chebukati told candidates contesting in the elections during a meeting with them at Bomas of Kenya, Nairobi.

The elections which were to be held during the general election on August 9 were pushed forward to August 23 after the commission realised a mistake in the ballot papers printed.

IEBC suspended twice Mombasa and Kakamega gubernatorial elections and four constituency seats - Pokot South, Kitui Rural, Rongai, and Kacheliba.

Chebukati cited threats and harassment of his officials as reasons to postpone the elections for a second time.
