UPDATE: 23 rescued, others missing in Tana River boat tragedy

At least 23 people have been rescued following a boat tragedy at the Kona Punda area within Madogo in  Tana River county.

Kenya Red Cross says the 23 are receiving treatment at the Madogo Hospital.

Others, however, believed to be at least 17 are still missing.

According to a witness, the boat with more than 40 passengers on board was on its way to Garissa from Madogo where it had picked up the passengers.

The 3 boats have been ferrying people from areas affected by floods since Saturday charging Sh1,500 per person.
